How Is India Overcoming The Water Scarcity Problem?

India is an overpopulated country, where every year, the birth rate is increasing. Due to this, people in India are facing the lack of basic needs. Besides all the problems, water scarcity is a major concern for the government. People are not aware of utilizing their natural resources in a proper manner.

Overutilization/ misutilization of water has led to this serious problem. To overcome its consequences, the government and non-profit organizations have come up with programs and projects. These initiatives have created awareness among the public to use water resources carefully and adopt sustainable usage.

Why Is Sustainable Usage Of Fresh Water Necessary Now?

Sustainable water management helps meet the current need for water. Moreover, it will meet social, ecological, and economic needs without compromising on future generations’ needs.

Every human should practice sustainable water usage to ensure its availability for the next generation. The water scarcity problem has become more critical in India. Researchers and scientists have claimed that the future generation may not get enough natural resources if the misutilization continues. Therefore, the benefits of sustainable water usage were explained to the public.

How Is Water Conservation Process Helping?

Water conservation is the process of reducing the overutilization of water. It is also defined as the practice of using water efficiently for the reduction of unnecessary wastage. The water conservation process includes policies, regulations, strategies, and initiatives for the sustainable management of freshwater. The Indian government has implemented policies for the public through programs and projects to combat water scarcity in India.

The conservation process protects the hydrosphere and meets the present and future water demand. The major reasons behind water scarcity are the growing population, household size, industrial activities, pollution, and other factors.

Implementation Of Water Conservation Practices To Combat Water Scarcity

There are several ways through which fresh water can be conserved. The below ways help India get rid of the water scarcity problem.

  • Implementing Conservation Process In Irrigation

According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the department of agricultural research and education, 70% of water is wasted in irrigation activities in India. Farming is the major occupation in India. The crop fields need a good amount of water for higher yielding. Due to this, a large amount of fresh water is wasted in irrigation activities.

The farmers still utilize traditional irrigation methods, leading to water wastage. The farmers started adopting advanced irrigation planning and systems to reduce the usage of water unnecessarily. Micro irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, and surface irrigation are advanced techniques that can reduce utilization. The NGOs and governments are making the farmers understand the need for freshwater and creating awareness to adopt advanced irrigation.

  • Restricting The Industries For Misutilization

Rapid urbanization has led to massive industrialization, due to which tonnes of water are wasted every day. The industries need water supply for various operational processes. But lack of following conversation practices in industries is another major reason behind the water scarcity in India.

The government has restricted the industries to limit the use of water.. The industries and factories were advised to follow the norms and policies of the water conservation process. Recycling water is another conservation practice that industries must follow for sustainable development. If industries are found not following the policies can lead to legal cases against them.

  • Water Pollution Measures And Sewage Treatment

The misutilization in India’s rural and urban areas has led to water pollution. The freshwater was badly affected. The people of rural areas practice their cleaning activities in the water bodies, which pollute them. Also, in the urban areas, industries, factories, warehouses, and others have directly leave their sewage and other solid waste into the water bodies.

These activities have made the freshwater harmful. Therefore, strict measures are taken to check water pollution. The industries are ordered to practice waste treatment to make it less harmful before the water flows into the water bodies. Chemicals and toxins are strictly ordered to be remove from the sewage. Moreover, the rural areas are informed to stop misusing the natural water bodies.

  • Control Over Residential Water Usage

The households are also overusing the water for domestic purposes. In cleaning, bathing, and other regular activities, water is highly wasted. The necessary amount of water is not used, and unnecessary water drainage is noticed. This factor is propelling the water scarcity in India.

Residential wastage of water also leads to waterborne diseases due to stagnant water in the surrounding. The entire society suffers from infectious diseases due to contamination. Therefore, control over residential water utilization and wastage is advised. The urban households are requested to adopt conservation activities such as rainwater harvesting and recycling water.

As the freshwater percentage is less, the people of India must follow the sustainable usage of water and adopt a water conservation process. These effective methods will help India to overcome water scarcity.
